Friends Gives $19,000 to Medway Library
At the July Medway Library Trustees meeting, Friends of the Medway Library Co-Presidents Meg Hamilton and Diane Busa presented a check for $19,000. Library Director Margaret Perkins told the Trustees, “We have the best Friends group anywhere! We are so grateful for everything they do. “
Most of the funds were raised from the large spring and autumn book sales, as well as memberships and donations. In addition, Friends continually has special small sales across from the circulation desk. The past year there were also week-long pop-up media sales, children’s and YA book sales, and cookbook sales. Also popular is the Summer Beach Read Cart with almost new mystery, romance, action and suspense paperback books, perfect for a lazy summer day.
Said Meg Hamilton, “We are so appreciative of all those people who decide to clean books off their shelves and donate them to the library. Now others can enjoy those books and the library has more funds for new materials, museum passes and programs, as well as equipment for the Makerspace. The library also needed new chairs for patrons, so the Friends donation helped pay for them.”
Friends of the Medway Library coordinates numerous activities with the library, including the summer lunch program held three days a week. Friends also sponsors the Lego Club and monthly children’s movies as well as the December Gingerbread Festival.
Surprisingly, all of these activities and sales are staffed by fewer than a dozen volunteers. Meg Hamilton stated, “I am really proud of all of our volunteers. They are always willing to sort books or be available for activities.”
Some of the volunteers offered why they enjoy helping out Friends. Trudi Stefan said, “I volunteer because it is fun and a great way to make new friends. I keep busy and help out the community at the same time.”
Lauren Guagenty emphasized, “The library is such an important part of our community. It’s not just about books; there are activities for everyone."
